Help
I am a nurse, it is my job to help and care for people. I like to do it, it is a lot of the reason why I became a nurse. If the patient really and truly needs my help, I will bend over backwards to do so. More recently we have been getting a lot of asshole patients. Some of these patients that while they are technically sick, they are able bodied enough to do most things for themselves. Things like, feeding themselves, using the urinal, sitting up, rolling over, etc. That’s great, you say. Yes, it is. The trouble is that they CAN do all these things, they just WON’T. They don’t seem to understand that they are not staying at a hotel or spa. I am not your mommy, you are not an infant, do it your damned self.
I got so frustrated with one of these people this morning that I practically yelled at him. He hadn’t helped his case by being on the call bell ALL NIGHT. “Bring me this… bring me that… I need help sitting up… put me in the chair… put me back to bed… help me sit on the side of the bed so I can use the urinal (he did this himself several times throughout the night without a bit of anyone’s help, I know this because I saw him).” NO! Go the fuck to sleep! You are taking my attention away from my other four patients, most of them sicker than you are and needing my help more. Thankfully we had a nursing assistant last night, so she was able to help with some of the annoyance, but by the morning we had both had it. He really made my blood boil with that helpless act.
