It seems that parents have been doing this for a while… and it really pisses me off. I’m sorry your kid has ears that stick out, but they’re freaking 7 years old, they don’t need plastic surgery. Who is to say that now that her ears are fixed she won’t be bullied or teased? She also has freckles, are you going to get her skin bleached so she doesn’t get teased about those too? The mom said something akin to, “Kids are ruthless.” That’s true. So you got the most obvious thing ‘fixed’, they’ll just find something else to tease her about if they so choose.
Plus, though it’s terrible to say, teasing can be character building or something to that effect. Also, it’s stuff like that makes for the fodder that drives creative minds, particularly comedians. I honestly think we coddle children just a little too much these days. You can’t fight all their battles for them.
Maybe I’ll think differently when I actually have children of my own, but as of right now I think it is absolutely ridiculous to put a 7 year old through an elective, cosmetic surgery. Yes, surgery is pretty safe now, but there are still risks, particularly with the anesthesia. No way would I risk my child’s life to fix something that is not life-threatening. Next thing you know they’re going to start doing lap-bands on all the little fatties instead of teaching them to eat right, exercise and prevent them from living such sedentary lifestyles somewhat (aka limit video game time and computer time).
